Hi Phil

That sounds terrific.

I'd wish, that I had access to a handfull of different MMC-2 CPUs and memorysticks.
Then, some almost scientific experiments would have taken place here ;-)
And of course...all this information would be shared here.

Why this and why that...? I just gotta _know_ !

With the PIII-500MHz and PC100 SO-DIMM on the mainboard, it would be exciting to see if the boot error disappears.
Will the obscure memorylimit disappear, when the overall FSB is 100MHz ?

It's also quite interesting to find out exactly why the system have these absurd behaviors, not seeing more than 512MB, when the 440BX is capable of seing 1024MB:

Mainb - Slot 1 - Slot 2
64MB 256MB 256MB, The 64MB PC66 is ignored.
128MB 128MB 256MB, all sticks works, being PC100. It's funny that the mainboard ram is actually being seen, even though it's larger than 64MB.

What little "thing" is sitting and tastes the amount of RAM and decides that:
"Oh no, you ol' bucket. I can't handle more than 512MB. You're way out here. I'm gonna ignore everything above my limit" ???
The software inside BIOS ?
If so...someone on this beautyful planet should have the ability to go inside the software, locate the limitation and change that.

Or maybe the problems ly within the chipsets.
I took the time and run through the twbook to compare ThinkPads from the chipsets.

These have the 440BX AGPset/82371EB PIIX4E

390, 390E, 390X. CPU's up to PIII-500MHz, FSB100, but max 512MB
560Z, 570, CPU's up to PII-366MHz....not relevant.
600E, CPU's up to PII-400MHz.

These have the 440BX AGPset/but PIIX4M

570E, PIII-500MHz, FSB100
600X, PIII-650MHz, FSB100, max RAM 576MB

Now. It seems interesting that the 390X, with the same architecture as the 770X/Z runs well with the PIII-500MHz CPU and FSB100.
Still....in the txbook...it can't take more than 512MB RAM.

I'll dive into the PIIX-4E and PIIX-4M matter at the Intel site.....Perhaps some things can be clarified there.

Oh God...Why did I get my hands on a ThinkPad ? :-)
It's almost like being in love with a woman, who holds back all the desired information, leaving the poor guy with nothing than guesswork.
Anyone knows the feeling ? ;-)

Best regards
Brian
