With the cards - those that have a big bulge on the end have decent
antennas, those that are flat use strip line antennas etched on the
circuit board - but said circuit board is pretty lossy at microwave
frequencies and thus those (flat) cards don't work as well.

I aven't ripped into any thinkpads or anything else with built in
antennas, but I suspect the pcmcia cards with the bulges (meaning
they have a decent antenna inside) will work the best here due to
all the hardware being next to even the best of built-in antennas...

And then of course of you can find a card with a flip-up antenna
that would probably be even better, or an external ant connector
that can be used with a "real" antenna would be best of all...

All that said, Proxim/Orinoco make some pretty damn good cards..
I've also had excellent results with the D-Link 802.11b stuff
that uses the TI chipsets: 900AP+ and 650+ cards.
