[Thinkpad] Re: Top 3 Best and Worst Things about a new IBM

Best:
1. Most improved ThinkPad model in almost all aspects: build (size,
weight, quality), practical features (USB 2.0, built-in WiFi on some
models), computing power with battery endurance (Pentium M).
2. The proven ThinkPad ergonomics: simple, easy to use, comfortable and
innovative accessibility features.
3. "Affordable"-luxury (various low-end to mid-range models)

Worst:
1. Not exactly an upgrade from older A/T-series. Most existing
A/T-series accessories are not compatible, with the exception of the
power adapter. Ultrabay slim doesn't take Ultrabay devices. Ultrabay
slim hard disk adapter doesn't take the 12mm harddisk which contains
backup from my T30. My existing port replicator can't be used with it
either.
2. Tight spot for cable lock, right next to the USB ports.
3. It's so good, it makes you want another one for you and everyone else.

I've had various ThinkPads from work (755, 770, 390x, T20, A20p, T30),
but only the T40 was the one I purchased brand-new on my own. I decided
to go with the mid-range 2379-D6U (Pentium M 1.4, SXGA, 40GB High Speed,
Intel 802.11b, 768MB with upgrade, a total pkg of $2K); the SXGA is a
must for me and this model is the cheapest one with it. No bluetooth or
firewire, but a $30 card would solve that problem should I ever need it.
The battery lasts, though I'm waiting for the ultrabay slim battery to
be more ubiquitous on eBay. It runs Java IDE and heavy-duty Web
Applications with no problem -- I didn't do any benchmark but it feels
snappier than my previous T30 (top of line 2366-97U, P4 2Ghz, same RAM).
The Intel 802.11B (2100 3B) works fine and covers an excellent range.
It's small and lightweight, much more so than the T30, but costs me $1K
less than what uncle sam paid for the T30 on my previous project.
