interesting comment..
a HDD customer recently sent back a 40gig travelstar as
dead..
dead does not describe it..
shattered is more accurate..
it sounded like broken glass was inside the HDU..
won't bore with the details, but i opened the HDD and found
that the top platter was shattered..
tiny bits of glass platter inside with no apparent signs of
trauma to the exterior..

in a later conversation with this customer, he mentioned
that he would need to put any HDD he returned for warranty
into a microwave oven to destroy any ability to recover the
critical info from the HDD...

so, now i wonder if the HDD with the shattered platter might
have had a brief sojourn in a microwave which resulted in
that shattered platter.. ??!

anyone care to comment..? :-)
