RE: [Thinkpad] What's a good choice?

I have and use a ThinkPad 770X with the following upgrades:

* CPU: from PII 300Mhz to PII 400Mhz
* Memory: from 32MB to 320MB
* HD: from 8.4 GB(4200RPM) to 20GB (5400RPM, with fluid drive)
* Communications: 56KB Mwave modem (disabled) to Xircom CardBus
Modem/Ethernet PCCard
* OS: from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Pro + SP3

The only other upgrade I wish was possible was Video Ram. With the 14.1"
LCD,
you are limited to 4MB; the 13.7" screen had 8MB. Unfortunately, you cannot
use 8MB of ram with the 14.1" screen.

I have owned this machine for (3) years; my unit was manufactured in 1999.
Over my (3) years of ownership, the major components had problems:

- Power Inverter: failed this past summer (after 4 years)
- Hard Drive: still works but failed the Smart Defender diagnostics

This machine is currently used as a home server with a SelectaDock III
and SCSI CD-R burner.

For a ThinkPad that is entering it's 5th year of operation, I have been very
pleased and impressed.

However, in 2004, I would recommend a T23 (with a 14.1" LCD) or a A21P (with
a 15" LCD). I have been using a T23 (with Win2000) and a docking stations
as my daily machine for the past 7 months. I am very pleased with the T23,
especially with the WiFI capabilities.

What is the largest CPU that can go into the 770Z, if I put 100MHz memory
in?

Chris,

Actually, a 6X DVD drive is equivalent to a 48X CD, so yes, that _IS_
blisteringly fast.

Besides, when it comes to watching a DVD, or playing an audio CD, they ALL
run
at only 1X.

600X will go to 576MB.

Max upgrade on the 650MHz 600X is a PIII 850MHz. The 770Z happily uses PC100
RAM, but I haven't gotten one past 512MB yet.
