Yes, the drives are interchangeable. You'll just need to snap off the T22
plastic bracket from the drive and snap the A31p plastic bracket onto it.

You don't need to reinstall XP unless you want to. Your existing XP
installation should run fine on the A31p, except for one major snag that is
easy to fix with a registry edit. If you simply move the disk and try to
boot it, you will probably get a "Stop 0x0000007B" bluescreen error. This is
caused by a missing Plug and Play identifier for the IDE controller in your
new machine.
To avoid this problem, you need to add the new PnP identifier to the
registry before you remove the drive from the T22. I went through this when
moving XP from an A21p to an A30p, which have the same IDE controllers as
your T22 and A31p.
If memory serves, the file below was the registry entry I added. Copy the
text between the lines of dashes below to a file called newide.reg (or
whatever.reg). You'll need to combine the two lines beginning with [HKEY and
ending with 7111] into a single line. Then double-click that file and click
Yes or OK when RegEdit asks you if you want to merge this information into
your registry.
---------------------------
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
CriticalDeviceDatabase\pci#ven_8086&dev_7111]
"Service"="intelide"
"ClassGUID"="{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}"
---------------------------
After doing this, you should be able to shut down XP and move the drive to
the A31p and have it boot right up. You'll want to go to IBM's website and
update the various drivers available there, but other than this IDE patch
you can do all those on the new machine.
If you still get the Stop 0x0000007B error after applying this registry
patch, see the Microsoft article below for a longer .reg file that should
definitely fix the problem (move the disk back to the T22 to apply this .reg
file):
"You Receive a Stop 0x0000007B Error After You Move the Windows XP System
Disk to Another Computer"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314082
If you do install XP from scratch on the A31p, you won't need to mess with
the registry--XP will set up the correct IDE controller during the install.
But I sure found it convenient to be able to move my existing XP
installation from my A21p to the A30p. I did one other thing when I moved
the drive: I set up two hardware profiles, one for the A21p and one for the
A30p, to make it easy to move the drive back to the A21p if I ever wanted
to. Indeed, I can now boot up the same drive in either the A21p or the A30p,
and XP has all the drivers needed for both systems.
One other thing you should do before moving the drive is upgrade XP to
Service Pack 1, if you haven't done that already. If XP does decide it wants
to be reactivated, Service Pack 1 gives you three days to do it, much more
convenient than the original XP which required immediate reactivation.
There's a good chance that XP won't require any reactivation at all, though,
and if it does, you can probably activate over the Internet. If that fails,
you'll need to call MS and reactivate that way.
