[Thinkpad] DVD Playback (was something about SXGA)

I know on my 600X, the video output is only enabled in 16 bit color mode.
This makes for awful posterizing of video. Any gradation has obvious
stepping from one shade to the next. It's really quite hideous and
distracting. I hope the newer machines have all given that up.

Also note that the resolution of DVD's is 720x480 for NTSC and 720x576 (or
something like that) for PAL. That's all there is. If anything gives more
pixels out, it is making them up (although it may do that beautifully).

If you want the full output, you must indeed use progressive video, but a
laptop LCD is progressive. It is a bit small for my taste for enjoying
most movies, but that's a personal matter.

A real DVD player will also likely play more formats, such as VCD, SVCD,
DiVX, MPEG and on more media, such as CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW.

Another big feature is multi-channel audio.

Less setup is a feature I like. A DVD player is ready to play a disc
seconds after power-up, unlike any laptop.

Somebody stop me.
