The size of a HDD market and technical issues determine pricing,
availability, etc. It's easier to fit more stuff in a larger package. There
are many manufacturers of desktop drives, the drives are widely available
and the drives are physically bigger than 2.5" notebook drives. You can
easily find relatively large drives at reasonable prices. 2.5" notebook
drives are less available, more expensive and have lower capacity. 1.8"
drives are rare and obviously smaller than 2.5" drives. 1.8 drives may also
be more fragile.

No problem swapping on the x31. The x40 web page warns you not to swap too
often.
