I used the latest drivers from IBM's support site. Have already
installed them twice as - once undocked - my T30 forgot to offer
the 1400x1050 at all.

I'm not completely sure. But I think True Color was available.
With High Color, XP draws some quite annoying color "gaps" with
menu bars in office applications. All smooth gradients with
menus are gone. And I am sure that those smooth gradients have
been present before.
My problem might have something to do with a corrupted lcd panel
driver as all available resolutions are only listed with "repeat
rates" of 60 and 70 Hz whereas the lcd panels used 50 Hz from all
I know.

Did you update your ATI drivers from IBM's model-specific drivers on
their web site or did you download drivers directly from ATI? If the
latter then I suggest getting IBM's specific drivers.
You did have True Color at 1400x1050 before the driver update, right?
