per ibm, PC2700 will work fine in a T40 (PC2100) thinkpad, but will run at
266mhz..

Subject: [Thinkpad] T40, PC2700

Hi,

 Recently I bought a Thinkpad T40 with 256MB.
It has one 256MB PC2100 so-dimm at slot 1.
I would like to increase memory to 1GB.
Anyone knows if T40 is compatible with so-dimm's PC2700
as the one sold by Micron (Crucial)?
And if it is will the memory run at 333Mhz?

Cheers,

Jorge Ferreira

First, IBM's tawbook does not have that model. More on that later.

IBM's web site says you've got a better machine:

-600X- -T20- (2647-81G)
650MHz PIII max 700MHz PIII
64MB RAM 128MB RAM
maybe DVD came with 6x DVD
13.3" TFT 14.1" TFT
maybe TV out TV out
W98SE or W2K W2K
NIC add-on NIC built-in
5.0 lbs 5.3 lbs
4MB video RAM 8MB video RAM

So it looks like you've got a very comparable machine. If the tiny amount
of extra weight doesn't offset the faster CPU for you... you might
complain. Me? I'd keep the newer machine. Any accessories you buy for it
will transfer to newer machines than ones you might have bought for the
600X (said as an owner of two 600E's and one 600X).

The extra video RAM can come in handy if you upgrade to XP and want two
simultaneous displays.

Now... I recently went looking for RAM prices because one of my 600E's has
only 96MB RAM. I saw that some 600E's can take 256MB parts, but only a
list of a few. Well, according to twbook, there were only 11 600E models
made, and nine of them will accept the big RAM. But the note on IBM's site
lists a bunch of other models.

Does this mean that our beloved reference books only refer to US-specific
models (all the models end with "U" as in AAAA-BBU)? If so, are other
books available for other countries, or do I have to go to IBM's site each
time I want to get details about some machine that catches my eye on eBay?

Don't forget that those models tend to be the 7 lb cheapskate specials or
desktop replacement models that any no one in here with a 5x0, 600, T, X,
or R series machine and a right state of mind would buy.
I don't think that those suckers were built with quality or travel
durability in mind. Most of the machines there just screams "Hey, buy me!
I'm too lazy to do some online comparisons and those machines are
overpriced for the specs that they offer!"

Well, most Inspirons ARE latitudes with a crappier warranty agreement and
a slightly smaller pricetag, and the Thinkpads? Well, you pay through the
nose for the brand name, but in most cases they are well worth it.
Here. I'll prove the point by dropping my Thinkpad 240 on the floor.
(Hey! It still works!)
Thank you. My point has been proven.

Hi All. In my quest for 600E RAM, I thought some of you folks might also
want to upgrade your RAM, and therefore might have some used (read cheap)
memory for sale in your older ThinkPads.
I'm looking for one piece of either 128MB (preferred) or 256MB PC100
SODIMM SDRAM for a 600E, from a top-tier memory maker (Crucial, IBM, etc.)
and (checking eBay for prices...) I'd like to get one for no more than $25
(for 128MB) shipped (to Minnesota). Crucial sells one new for $48.99.
If you want to be rid of one, let me know.

But FYI... For me to get the warranty extension, I had to be writing them
via my business email (vs. personal), that matched the business name, which
matched a verifiable business address (either by web site, or business

Sigh.... But hopefully in a week or so, I'll finally have the upgrade I

Wow! What a hassle -- not to mention the fact that many businesses don't
use
corporate credit cards, websites or pay for business
email or phone listings.
They'd have a field day with me; I have two businesses, for which I file
two
Schedule Cs with my tax return -- and "Deanna Berman"
is the legal name of each!
Y'know, I just remembered that I got an industry discount of a couple
hundred dollars from IBM when I bought my X21. Nobody asked
for any verification of anything!
Has anyone else run into these obnoxious roadblocks with IBM?

To change the font size of the entire display in Notes, you can do one of
the following:
  1. In Windows, enable High Contrast mode through your operating system,
then in Notes choose File - Preferences - User Preferences, and
select
'Use System Colors." Then choose View - Text Size - Largest, Larger,
or
Restore to change the size of the Notes display text.
(Macintosh OS X users: Notes - Preferences - User Preferences.)
Or
  2. Add large font settings to your NOTES.INI file.
To add large font settings to your NOTES.INI file
NOTES.INI is a configuration file, located in your Notes
directory,
that stores information about your personal Notes
installation.
If
you need to use larger fonts at all times, close Notes, open
your
NOTES.INI file, and add the following setting as a new line
anywhere
in the file (note, in R5, needs to be near the top before all
the
             font definitions):
                   Display_font_adjustment=n
Here, n is the number of points added to the default size and
is a
number between 0 and 25. For example, if you want to increase
the
font size to 5, you would type:
                   Display_font_adjustment=5
Save your NOTES.INI file after you add the new font line, and
then
             re-open Notes.
  3. Change the size of your display fonts in Windows. Changing your
Windows
display fonts affects all programs on your computer. Refer to Windows
      Help for more information.

It's easy to change character size in Notes. It is a setting in the
notes.ini file. Don't remember the variable name off the top of my head (it
is documented in the help files). I can get it tomorrow afternoon when I'm
back in the office. It works in Notes 4, 5, and 6. I use it on various
machines.

About three years IBM didn't want to sell me an extended warranty (EW) for
a
i1480, claiming that they were for business users only.
I raised hell.
Sent an email to Lou Gerstner, stating that none of the documentation with
the unit said and EW was not available for individual users, no indication
by the seller, etc.. Used the "D" word - discrimination.
I got an extended warranty fairly quickly after the issue was passed to
some
sort of ombudsman.
