multimedia is a pretty good reason, simply because you need the memory to
act as a buffer.

most of our users here with absurd memory needs are involved in some kind
of data or statistical analysis. they REALLY need the memory. GIS folks
are in the same boat, as are physicists and linguists of the right flavor.

frankly there is a lot of data that we can't even pretend to process with,
say, MS Excel - you hit the 255 column, 65536 row limit extraordinarily
quickly :)

laptops with 4-6GB of ram would be super-keen. Apple is probably going to
go there with their next generation - current generation G4 machines can
go to 2gb easily. G5 laptops, when they come out, will probably go to
more.
