[Thinkpad] Sharp turn in speed

For a few days now, of a sudden, I notice strange behaviour on the
Thinkpad. Like where I clicked on some program, email or whatever, it
does not come up on screen as usual. But it stands there clicking away.
And nothing seems to respond. I can click some things on the desktop. But
I might click the Start menu, and nothing happens.

I have noticed since that if I leave the computer for a half hour, the
email program, or some other will have come on screen. And does seem to
work. Maybe if I picked Wordpad, it takes some while, but not so long. Do
any means occur to you of how to ferret out what may be happening?
