FYI, we settled for an ASUS SCB-2408-D combo drive in combination with
an IBM Firewire card. As compared to an USB-2.0 solution, the Firewire
solution has the advantage that no additional adapters are needed (the
Firewire cable directly connects the card and the drive). In addition,
the ASUS drive is very small and light weight and seems to be well
suitable for creating images from CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs for use with e.g.
Daemon Tools. The only disadvantage of the drive is that it needs a
separate power supply, but there seem to be few, if any, DVD or combo
drives available that run without one (unless they have a battery). From
what I saw when skimming its manual, not even the IBM USB DVD drive
does.

I found out that the IBM portable USB 1 CD-ROM drive seems to be
identical to the Teac CD-224PUK, aside from some minor design
adjustments such as the color of the case. As for the other drives, I
have no idea.
