Yes, the limit was set when 256MB sticks were few and far between. Your unit
will accept 2X256MB RAM for a total of 556MB installed.

There are several caveats however. You MUST have the latest BIOS installed. You
MUST use PC100 memory and the memory MUST be lo-density, i.e 8 chips per side of
the stick.
Best source for RAM is www.crucial.com Simply select a Thinkpad 600X rather than
a 600E as your model and any of the memory listed for the 600X will work in your
unit.

The 600 series doesn't share memory for video. There's 2.5MB built into the
Neomagic video card and that's all you get.
