[Thinkpad] T23 2648-LU7 with LG GCC-4240N-based Thinkpad CD-RW/DVD ROM Combo IV Ultrabay 2000 Drive

Hello,

There's been some discussion of the LG GCC-4240N CD-RW/DVD combo drive
on the list, so I wanted to share my experiences with using one in my
IBM ThinkPad T23 [2648-LU7, P3 1GHz, 1GB RAM, 30GB HDD, Win XP Pro].

I purchased one on the 30th from Ositech for $126.00USD shipped and it
arrived today. The model was just listed as "ThinkPad UltraBay 2000 24X
CDRW/DVD Combo, NEW!" on their web site, so I wasn't sure if I was getting
a III or a IV series drive.

The model I received was the IV series, based on LG's GCC-4240N combo CD-RW/
DVD-ROM disc drive. It had a FRU of 08K9868 and manufacture date of 09/03.
It did not have the latest firmware installed, which I downloaded from IBM's
web site and installed without problem.

After updating the firmware I tried burning a CD-R at 24X, reading the CD-R
in the laptop as well as my desktop, installing software from a CD-ROM, playing
a copy-protected game from a CD-ROM, playing an audio CD, accessing a DVD-ROM
and watching a DVD. All the actions performed successfully.
