Judith,
You can change your BIOS settings so that the computer does not suspend
when the lid is closed. Fn-F4 is reasonably convenient for suspending.
It's not supposed to be good to carry a laptop with a spinning disk,
but I've never had any trouble, and you're already doing that anyway.
Someone has probably written a utility to power down a disk, or you
can wait until it does so itself if it is idle.
Some thinkpads overheat if left running with the lid closed, but it
takes hours for this to happen (at room temperature). My X20, X21, and
A21P do not. An A30 that I use at work does.
I do not have a 600, so I do not know the steps to turn off automatic
suspend on lid close, but most BIOS setup screens are navigable with
only a little flailing about.
