My Thinkpad has kind of laggy performance (2366-B2U) which basic specs is a P4m 2GHz, 512mb (i upgraded to this), 40GB 5400rpm HD, blah blah. I decided to benchmark my HD using HDtach and was shocked to find a 3MB/sec transfer rate?!?!? That is pretty poor... I checked my device manager and found that the hard drive is running on PIO mode... it is set to 'use dma if possible' though, so I don't really know what to do. I'm pretty sure this hard drive can support DMA mode, correct me if I'm wrong, but it should support DMA 5. Even my secondary IDE detects the combo drive I have as DMA 2... why is my stupid hard drive on PIO???? Can anyone with experience shed light on this? I have solved problems like this on other systems by changing BIOS settings, but I don't see anything in the Thinkpad BIOS that would help. I think if I fix this problem, my performance will increase dramatically (I hope).
Thanks in advance!
