Thanks to lightning fast response from list members, I now have a completely
disassembled laptop and have repaired [I hope!] the broken left hinge, FRU#
05K5465, fitting assembly on the Base Cover, FRU# 05K5482.
In the process, I may have created another problem. The inside surface of
the Base Cover has a thin aluminium sheet with what appears to be copper
spring plates to support the planar board. Parts of the aluminium sheet are
two “covers” that have a lightweight steel bracket attached. The two screws
that secure the hinge fitting to the Base Cover pass through the steel
bracket. Unfortunately I broke the left “cover” where it bends up at right
angles from the horizontal surface of the aluminium sheet. The right side
hinge fitting assembly is perfect.
Is the “wholeness” of the fitting critical to the operation of the laptop
or, as I suspect and hope, it just made assembly of the laptop a bit easier.
If critical, any thoughts on how to repair it? I can get a new Base Cover
from IBM here in Canada but I would rather see if I can do a successful
repair job.
Thanks,
Peter Darrach
