Hello,
I just purchased an UltraPort CompactFlash Adapter (FRU 19K4510) for $19.00
plus tax from TechForLess to use with my IBM ThinkPad T23 (2648-LU7) running
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition. The URL to the item is
<http://www.techforless.com/cgi-bin/tech4less/19K4510>
from TechForLess' web site. The adapters are new in sealed boxes and
contain all the mounting hardware, a manual and a driver CD for Microsoft
Windows 98.
After removing the rubber plug at the top of my T23's bezel and puzzling
through the somewhat-lacking Installation Guide I now have a CompactFlash
slot at the top of my ThinkPad.
I tested mine with a SimpleTech 256MB CompactFlash card and it worked
fine.
The device is actually a bit more bulky then it appears and is actually a
USB 1.1 device despite the strange connector. This page on IBM Japan's web
site gives a better idea of what it looks like installed:
<http://www-6.ibm.com/jp/pc/option/obi/nob11/19k4510/19k4510a.html>
The device only works with Type I and Type II CompactFlash storage cards,
e.g., FlashRAM or MicroDrives, so trying to plug a GPS, BlueTooth, WiFi or
other CompactFlash card isn't going to work.
Still, if you have an A- or T-series with an UltraPort connector on top of
the LCD's bezel, need a CompactFlash I/II reader, and your PC Card, USB and
parallel ports are full or don't want a separate device, it might be a good
investment.
Here's the download page for the manual from IBM's web site:

No connection with any of the companies mentioned other than occasionally
giving them money.
Regards,
Aryeh Goretsky
