After a new 60 GB hard drive, CDRW and fresh load of W2K with a clean install
I finally had a problem I couldn't over come. I attempted to install a 1.0
GHz SL53S Intel PIII CPU and a fan from a T21 laptop. The BIOS needed the date
reset as expected but it also said fan error. I noticed where the T21 fan
had three wires and my T20 had four so I removed the T21 fan added a dab of
Artic Silver to make sure I had good a thermal transfer and attempted to boot
again. This time after setting the time and date again I got to the W2K startup
screen before it shut down. I shut down the system. Took it apart again and
reseated the CPU. Clean up the area, added just enough thermal compound and
the T20 fan. I booted to BIOS set date and time. Saved and booted to W2K and
this time I got to the desktop before it died again. Finally, I reinstalled by
700 MHz PIII and ran through the whole deal again where it booted just fine.
Have I left something out like flashing the BIOS after the CPU switch? I
already have version 1.21 or do I possibly have a bad CPU?
I usually learn more when thing go wrong rather than go right but I wish this
wouldn't be such a learning experience.
Thanks as always,
Mike Scott
