[Thinkpad] OT: Dell Lattitude WinXP compared to Solid State 560x with Win98 Lite

Here's an interesting comparison.
Lady Diane just got a Dell Lattitude (1.7 Ghz 1Gb Ram Win XP Pro)
through work. Naturally I had to play with it.
After figuring out how to tell it to look for my wireless network
instead of the hospital's I decided to see if there was any noticeable
difference in speed between a fast late model laptop saddled with a
bloated OS and an arguably obsolete 560 with a stripped down Win98 (or
tarted up DOS) OS installed.
Being lazy I just timed how long it took to start up and how long it
took to launch Word.
And now the envelope please....
Dell/XP start up (including log in and McAffee scan) 1 minute 31 seconds
Solid State 560/Win98 Lite start up 1 minute 15 seconds
Both launched Word in about 3 seconds, Word 2002 for the Dell and Word
97 for the 560.
In conclusion I'm inclined to think that the 560 came off pretty well.
Certainly the newer computer with the faster OS (and later software) is
capable of many things the 560 will never do but if your needs are
simple it seems that the 560 manages pretty well.
I'm going see if she'll let me install IrfanView in which case we can
try opening the same graphics file. I expect the 7:1 processor speed
advantage may be significant.....

technology is the answer, what was the question?
