Reminds me of a problem I had many years ago with a 2.5" IDE
adaptor. The laptop drive didn't work. I blamed the 2.5"
adaptor and "worked around" the problem.

A couple of years later, I discovered that the problem was the IDE
cable- defective. One can check that by putting another IDE
device (properly jumpered) on the cable instead of the laptop
drive.
