If you buy a new machine from an authorized dealer, you can fax in the proof and the warranty will start then. by default it is the original ship date.
Something repaired in 2001 is almost for sure out of warranty.

It's news to me that the warranty starts when the machine was made.
Thinking about it, that means if a dealer who didn't sell very well held
onto a system for a year, that 3 year warranty on my A series unit
would be a 2 year warranty for me? I don't think so.
