[Thinkpad] T23:Trackpoint scrolling never works w/Java-based application

On my T23 (W2K) the scrolling third mouse button never functions with applications that have Java-based GUI's (for example, Mozilla Firebird, Opera 7). The scrolling software clearly doesn't recognize the scroll bars that Java generates for its windows.

Does this drive anyone else crazy, and does anyone know of a solution? An application that won't let me use the scroller is almost useless to me. It seems like others would encounter this, and maybe IBM could code for it.
