[Thinkpad] More Mouse Problems -- MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer II -- almost OT

I just recently acquired the above mouse.

My original (chorded) Intellimouse Explorer (MS Intellpoint 3.x) was a
recommended model to use with AutoCAD. The two extra buttons on the
side provide additional productivity in AutoCAD. So I kept upgrading
my mouse -- along with the SW versions from 3.x to 4.1 to 5.0, the latest.

The problem I ran into is that on my TP-A31p the latest MS
Intellimouse Explorer does not work fully. In Lotus-123 the E-W scroll
works great -- BUT -- the N-S scroll does NOT work at all. In AutoCAD
(LT-2002), the "ESC" command is no longer an available button option.
Both of these are show-stoppers for me.

The interesting difference between the 5.0 and 4.1 SW is that the 5.0
includes a file named "COMMANDS.XML", which is a collection of
customization scripts.

Has anyone in the TP user universe come across the above described
issues? (I've just spent (no, WASTED) over 2 hours with MS support --
Bombay and Dheli -- where else -- with no solution.) Your help, hints,
patch is greatly appreciated. If possible I'd like to have a universal
mouse solution -- not custom mice (plural?) for the various apps because
I have these apps loaded simultaneously..
