[Thinkpad] thinkpad security, is a hardware firewall enough?

I'm concerned about protecting my Win98 Lite 560x from malware.
I have a linksys BEFW11SF wireless router connected to my cable modem
(dynamic IP). So far I've been clean as far as Norton AV and Bazooka can
tell. Is the router an adequate firewall (as good as a software firewall)?
I'm mostly worried about my 560x being turned into a spam zombie (a
wimpy spam zombie perhaps). Can anyone suggest a software utility that
would let me know when anything sends messages out.
