This may not apply to you, but here are some reasons that I won't buy
anything but IBM ThinkPad laptops:

- Cachet. IBM's are known to be the Cadillac of laptops. They deserve
their reputation for the reasons that follow.

- Build quality. They do not feel like toys. They feel like the
professional tools they are. If you want cheap stamped screwdrivers, get
them at the checkout at Target. If you want good tools, go to Sears and
buy Craftsman.

- Service. Fast, no-hassle warranty repairs. Web site that is second to
none. Drivers back to DOS. BIOS upgrades for a decade or more.

- Parts. Since so many people buy ThinkPad's, upgrades are available and
reasonably priced.

- Compatability. Hardware makers have to test with IBM. Everything works
with them.

- Style. IBM knows mechanical design. When the BOX that a laptop comes in
impresses me, I know that good work goes into the machine as well, and
it's obvious from the way the things look.

- Reliability. Because they are built well, they last. My 600X is nearly
four years old now and has never failed in almost daily use. Win98SE, then
W2K and now XP Pro all work flawlessly.

- Resale. I know a lot of people only buy ThinkPads. These are the people
I want to sell my current ThinkPad to. They know what they get for the
price.

I'm sorry your last two ThinkPads caused you problems. Maybe you should
have had them in for repair, or maybe more format and reinstall cycles
would have helped. My ThinkPads have been exquisitely reliable unless and
until Windows goes brain dead. Thankfully with XP I can back up to a
restore point and move on.

Sony? Toy. Cool toy, sure! But a toy. Toshiba? Who? Compaq? gak.

Dell? Fine workhorse. No style. The only other bad thing I can say about
them is that they are not IBM.

Best of luck,
Chris Schumann
