Hi Paul!
I use W2K Professional SP3 on my TP 600 with no problems at all. If you
encountered them it means your BIOS version is old. Upgrade it to the last
version and REINSTALL OS. I experienced a dozen of installations of W2K on
different TP 600 in such manner and no drivers needed, no undetected
devices, no hardware conflicts. Win XP uses more resources and disk space so
I think it's not a good substitution for W2K on old machines.
To Dimitrios: the battery in TP 600 is a "smart battery" it means it
reports amount of charge to OS itself in percents. OS (it's APM subsystem)
never know the charge remaining until it polls the battery. So issue is the
battery but not XP or any other OS. It's clear that the battery reports the
wrong charge or may be it's capacity become low due to old or defective
cells.
