Deanna, if you have the skills to deal with Windows you have the skills
to deal with the open source world. I won't say its exactly easier to deal
with things in 'my' world, but I don't have the periodic panic that exists
in the Windows world where the entire system is vulnerable to some
new creeping horror of the week.
Whatever OS you ever move to, plan on wanting to throw the computer
out the window at least twice (and this includes Mac OS), but that is the
nature of systems right now. You will have problems at times, but there
are always resources from which to draw upon.
ThinkPads make great non-Windows platforms. Go for it!
