Why a laptop at all? Or, if occasional mobility is necessary, why not a
laptop with an external monitor?
If you do get him a laptop, newer=better LCD. When I got my 560X
working again last week, I lined up my 560, the 560X, the new X30, and
my wife's T23 on our coffee table. The display difference was striking,
with the newer machines handily beating out the older ones on brightness
and readibility.
