I went into Control Panel | System | Network Adapters | Advanced
and found the following for the 11a/b/g adapter:

802.11b Preamble: Long and Short (other choice Long only)
Power Save Mode: Normal (other choices Maximum and Off)
and nothing related to RTS/CTS

Are you saying I need to change the first two? And where do I find
RTS/CTS?

FWIW, I had Forte Agent downloading Usenet messages while this was
happening, so it's not an inactivity issue with the network card.
