[Thinkpad] R40e - speakers and earphones simultaneously?!

Hi,
My son in law who is less familiar with computers
asked me to help him set up his new TP R40e.

We have installed all the up to date drivers from
ibm.com's matrix, but still have a few strange things
happening.

One is that when earphones are plugged in, sound IS
heard through the phones, but the speakers do NOT turn
off. So the same sound can also be heard from the TP's
speakers.

Can someone explain to me how this can be? How can I
fix it so that when listening with earphones, other
people do not hear via the speakers?
