James is probably assuming that you've already found the TrackPoint
sensitivity options and set it at "Firm Touch", but since you did not
mention it, I thought I'd ask. It might not be so easy finding it -- in
Thinkpad Configuration, after clicking on TrackPoint, select Mouse
Properties, and then TrackPoint again to find the sensitivity setting
slide-bar.

If you still have problems, take a look at http://www.sofpoint.com/ for an
alternate cap for the TrackPoint "stick". It was described by listmember
Mike Geary as flat and low enough that it did not stick up above his TP's
keys -- in fact he had to *increase* its sensitivity! (The issues were not
the same as yours, but you can read the discussion at
http://zurich.csail.mit.edu/hypermail/thinkpad/2003-06/0522.html).
