X24 should be under warranty. Have IBM send you a new keyboard.

    The TrackPoint has no moving parts. It is a strain gauge, so pressure puts
    force on a crystal that makes the resonant frequency change. Gunk inside
    the mechanism would either do nothing or break it completely, but I'd
    wager it is well sealed.
    
    I would think it is a heat related problem, either in the pressure
    transducer or a cold joint that works fine when at room temperature but a
    small amount of warming makes a connection break. If that's the case, I
    would expect it to get worse over time until it fails. It would be
    consistent with a sharp smack.
    
    If it were my machine, I'd buy another keyboard and keep it handy until I
    couldn't stand it anymore, then swap it in.
