[Thinkpad] Which Linux distro

Hi,

I'm looking to put Linux on a ThinkPad (probably a T22), but I'm not sure
which distro to go for.

Would have been RedHat before they decided to out MS Microsoft. SuSE is the
front runner now. Thought about Mandrake till I discovered it's French
(great for big lunches and snowboarding, but not so sure about software :-)

Should I be looking elsewhere? I want good GUI performance and RH9/Gnome is
like wading through treacle on my old P366 Compaq with 196Mb ram...
