[Thinkpad] TP 600X modem oddity

I cannot hold a connection to ATTGLOBAL.NET using a PC Card modem. When I use the
ATT Win98 dialer, it connects at only 4800 bps, and after a few seconds of connection
I receive BSOD with error mess "unable to write to disk in Drive C". Press any key."
However keyboard is non-responsive.

If I cannect with the old IBM Win98 dialer, I log in at 7200 baud but the remote server
disconnects. The log file indicates the remote server cannot determine the types of
error control or data compression. (In fact these should be specified in the modem
setup.)

Controls:

1-If I dial in over the Lucent winmodem, I connect at 41333 and can keep up
  the connection normally

2-When I boot to OS/2, I get a similar failure (cut off after about 5 seconds).

Note:

Inspecting the IBM device driver matrix, I find NO support for PCCard modems.

This is a perfectly good modem. I am concerned that for some reason the 600X
will not support it or I am overlooking something. I'd appreciate learning the
experiences of other users. I need to use the PCCard modem.
