[Thinkpad] Thinkpad series

Can anyone tell me the difference between the different letter'd
series of Thinkpad models? Each different letter, is it supposed to
have a simply summarized significance? G, R, T, X. And A seems to be
missing.

I try to look for commonality. But the specs blur by.

They generally all have DVD drives, and all the normal communications
bits and pieces.
