Greetings:

No questions here. Just some 'words of wisdom' (pardon my embellishment).

At a recent electronics flea market, I was able to purchase for $20 a
complete thinkpad 770 with the following notation from the seller: it does
not turn on anymore, there may be something loose.

With this initial investment, the IBM TP 770 HRM and two hours of my time, I
was able to 'resurrect' this machine.

Since the main focus of this communication is to associate symptoms with
remedy, here is my 'analysis'

symptom: No boot, speaker and battery icon output on mini lcd display, no
led activity from internal CDROM.

remedy - complete teardown (disassembly) of the lower chassis with the
direction to reseat any board and connector. While I was at it, I replaced
the lithium battery. The result of this 'work' was a working machine albeit
there was no output to the LCD screen, which leads me to:

symptom: Normal boot (as verified by external display output) LCD displays
bright white light but no character output.

remedy: disassembly of LCD housing (easy with the activity from first step),
removal of four LCD to housing support screws in order to expose the back of
LCD. Visual examination indicated that the connector was not properly
seated; i.e. the gap between the mated pairs of the connector was at an
angle. Reseated, re-assembled and voila! No white screen and character
output.

Given the plethora of fingerprints on the aluminum chassis of the lower
assembly, I suspect the state of this laptop was the result of a failed
'repair job'.

Anyways: FWIW.
