I also tried that before (except for the muting of the microphone, checked
this again, doesn't change a thing). I also reinstalled the drivers.
As I wrote, the sound comes well through the headphone jack.
When you mute it in Windows, you lose it over the headphones, too.
Windows sound settings don't seem to be part of the solution.

As I already wrote: The speaker sound is okay when I replace the hard drive
with the one that has XP installed, but it's gone with the other drive under
Win98. In addition, even with Win98, I can hear the system beeps from the
speakers loud and clear. So there isn't an electrical problem with the
speakers, I presume. It's just WAVs, MIDIs and the like missing, and only
over the speakers, not over headphones.
This problem really drives me nuts. It is very, very strange.
