I believe I'm the other crazy, I had the same experience Matt did.
The first chip I tried didn't work, although it was recognised by the
hardware (power-on test) and Win2K (device manager) it was very unstable
and froze up repeatedly.
The memory stick had some sort of metal shield over the chips and a
white sticker with the following text:
HB56SW1664DBC-6L
9917 XD0665 /C
MADE IN JAPAN
I mentioned my problems to the E-bay vendor and she was quite apologetic
and sent me out a replacement stick and a prepaid mailer to retrun the
incompatible stick.
I put the replacement stick into my 560x (type 2640-70U) and it worked
fine with Win2K. I think Matt had to edit some system files to get his
memory to work with Win98.
The good stick has 8 chips each marked:
Japan F06W
0143 SNN
5113165FTD6
The stick also has a white sticker marked:
Super PC Memory Part# DL0117-G128 (does this mean I have a super PC?)
Dell Latitude CPi 128MB NE-EDO
FRU# 42002
Of course a quick searchh of the Dell web site came up with no such part
number....
As they say your mileage may vary
Good Luck
