Someone asked about Norton Ghost 9 and cloning disks from one XP computer to
another.
I have just purchased and installed Norton Ghost 9 in the last week, so I am
not an expert. Following are some preliminary observations and comments.
The product has been completely rewritten and now works totally through
Windows and in the background as you are using it.
It supports cloning to the same machine only. This can be a larger disk.
It is my (somewhat sketchy) understanding that you must use the Imaging
features to migrate to a different machine. ( Also keep in mind that XP has
"identity" issues when you reinstall Windows to a different machine.)
Automated backups come in a couple of flavors. You can: (1) make a basic
backup each month and make an incremental backup daily; or (2) you can make
a basic backup each week and an incremental backup as frequently as each
hour in the day.
I have set it up to backup to my 2nd HDD in the Ultra Bay (Thinkpad T41p).
When I take this drive out and replace it w/ my DVD/CD-RW, it cannot, of
course, write to the backup drive. You can disable the backup schedule
while you are using the DVD/CD-RW.
I have 2 60GB 7200 hard drives. It takes about an hour, give or take to make
the basic image w/ 45+GB of data and only 1-2 minutes to make the
incremental backups. This is done in the background. I am using standard
compression (40%) and the machine was only occasionally sluggish during the
basic backup.
One can open the image files to view individual files at any incremental
backup point. Restorations of files, folders, or images can be made from
any incremental point as well. (The old Norton Ghost was very slow in
viewing these files. Ghost 9 seems much speedier).
