[Thinkpad] CDROM missing / Hard Disk controller code 10 / compatibility mode

I have lost access to the CDROM and the hard disk is in compatibility
mode.

I've checked everything I can find on Microsoft
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;130179)
relating to this and can't find the answer.

I have recently bought a docking station and installed the drivers for
that - not sure if the problem occurred at the same time.

My laptop is a T20 running Windows 98SE.

I had this same problem on a 760XD laptop and forget how I solved it
(might have been a case of removing a program!).

Has anyone come across this and fixed it? Here's as much info as I can
think of:

There are two Standard Bus Mastering IDE Hard Disk Controllers. I have
removed and re-installed them to no avail. They are there and working
when on the docking station and the CD is accessible. Off the docking
station they both have a yellow exclamation mark and report "not
present, not working properly or not have all the drivers installed
(Code 10)". The driver is ESDI_506.pdr.

Drive C and D (two partitions on the one hard disk fitted) are
reporting using MSDOS compatibility mode filing system.

Any help much appreciated!
