[Thinkpad] Re: IBM selling PC operations including laptops Thinkpad Digest, Vol 15, Issue 6

Maybe that extended warrantee isn't such a good deal now.

The new owners will move to cut costs, as the PC market continues to mature and commoditize. Most likely replacement parts under warrantee will reflect this cost cutting.

IBM asked me for a business name as confirmation. I wonder if the next owner will attempt to use combined bus/personal use as an excuse not to honor a warrantee.

Subject: [Thinkpad] CDROM missing / Hard Disk controller code 10 /
compatibility mode

I have lost access to the CDROM and the hard disk is in compatibility
mode.

I've checked everything I can find on Microsoft
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;130179)
relating to this and can't find the answer.

I have recently bought a docking station and installed the drivers for
that - not sure if the problem occurred at the same time.

My laptop is a T20 running Windows 98SE.

I had this same problem on a 760XD laptop and forget how I solved it
(might have been a case of removing a program!).

Has anyone come across this and fixed it? Here's as much info as I can
think of:

There are two Standard Bus Mastering IDE Hard Disk Controllers. I have
removed and re-installed them to no avail. They are there and working
when on the docking station and the CD is accessible. Off the docking
station they both have a yellow exclamation mark and report "not
present, not working properly or not have all the drivers installed
(Code 10)". The driver is ESDI_506.pdr.

Drive C and D (two partitions on the one hard disk fitted) are
reporting using MSDOS compatibility mode filing system.

Any help much appreciated!

Solved - but not sure why?
I tried one last time to let Windows detect new hardware (I found a
note that this is how I'd sorted it before).
I answered no it's not in the list after the hardware were not found
in the plug and play search. Then the hardware was found in the
non-plug and play (despite already being present in the device
manager).
Halfway through the detection/installation of drivers the computer
re-booted (without warning) and now it's all working.
If I do another scan for new hardware there is still an IDE disk
controller in the list - but I'm going to leave it there for fear of
breaking the installation again!

While there's a million of these programs, I use tclock. The author's site
is in Japanese but if you google it, you'll find lots of places that have
it. Latest version is 2.2.8. Does everything you want (shows day, date,
time, synchs, can be a different color/size), is free, and runs on
W95/98/NT/2000/XP. (Although there is a tclocklite for XP I just found, the
regular tclock works fine on XP for me.)

A general guideline for any HDD is that the red/positive power lead will
always be next to pin#1 of the data cable (designated on the controller card
and/or by a red stripe in the ribbon cable).

This may not be true for SATA drives.

wonder, in this scheme, where would the A fit in, or what is it's

Subject: [Thinkpad] I.B.M. Said to Put Its PC Business on the Market
Just read this article in the Friday's New York Times.
They're selling the whole pc hardware division:
(Snipped)
"While I.B.M. long ago ceded the lead in the personal computer market to
Dell and Hewlett-Packard so it could focus instead on the more lucrative
corporate server and computer services business, a sale would nonetheless
bring the end of an era in an industry that it helped invent. The sale,
likely to be in the $1 billion to $2 billion range, is expected to include
the entire range of desktop, laptop and notebook computers made by I.B.M."
"According to the people close to the negotiations, I.B.M. is in serious
discussions with Lenovo, China's largest maker of personal computers, and at
least one other potential buyer for the unit. Lenovo was formerly known as
Legend."
"in the most recent quarter, I.B.M. ranked a distant third in worldwide PC
sales, with 5.6 percent of the market, according to Gartner, the market
research firm. Dell was the leader with 16.8 percent of the world market,
and Hewlett-Packard, which has absorbed Compaq Computer, had 15 percent."
"To trim costs, I.B.M. has steadily retreated from the manufacture of its
PC's. In January 2002, it sold its desktop PC manufacturing operations in
the Untied States and Europe to Sanmina-SCI, based in San Jose, Calif.
I.B.M. now confines its role in PC's to design and product development out
of its offices in Raleigh, N.C., with all the I.B.M.-brand desktop or
notebook computers made by contract manufacturers around the world."

Subject: [Thinkpad] A31 backlight problem
The backlight on my A31 (2652-D5A) is/has failed.
The backlight illuminates with a reddish hue for a few seconds (5-10)
after power on then flickers for a second and dies, the display remains
barely visible.
I read a couple of other posts which finger either the inverter or the
CCFL tubes (i.e the LCD panel)
I think the problem may be the inverter. I have measured the voltage
during power on and this far exceeds 500Vac for the time the backlight
is on and then falls to 0V.
Can anyone tell me the approximate operating voltage for the backlight ?
( By my very limited understanding is should be about 180Vac ? )
Alternatively if in fact the backlight tubes are dead/dying is this then
the behavior one would expect of a healthy inverter ?
TIA

Subject: [Thinkpad] A30/p Embedded Controller Update = Danger,
Will Robinson!
Hi All
It seems, I am having the same trouble as described in
Matt's article on the ThinkPad mailing list
http://illuminati.stderr.org/pipermail/thinkpad/2004-August/012775.html
After upgrading the Embedded Controller Program of my
ThinkPad non-IBM batteries get rejected.
Please, could you advise me on how to downgrade the
ECP again?
I tried to downgrade. But the diskette utility refuses
to work, because there is "no fully charged battery".
How to work-around this, other than by using an IBM
battery?
I am using the ThinkPad Model 2652 D5G. The label on
the bottom calls it A30. But IBM's driver download
site identifies it as A31.
BIOS: 1.08 - 1GET36WW
Embedded Controller Program: Updated to 1.03 -
1GHT16WW from 1.00 - 1GHT13WW
ECP 1.03 contains also the Enhanced battery control,
same as your ECP 1.06
>From the release notes:
This release supports the following system:
- ThinkPad A31p 2653-Hxx/Jxx/Lxx/Nxx
- ThinkPad
A31 2652-Axx/Bxx/Cxx/Dxx/Exx/Jxx/Kxx/Mxx, 2654-Cxx
... snip ...
<1.02 - 1GHT15WW>
-(Fix) Fixed the unexpected system restart during
standby/resume
operation, caused by fault recognition of a
non-existing
secondary battery.
-(New) Enhancement of the battery control.
1.03 - 1GHT16WW>
-(Fix) Fixed problems introduced by the previous
release, 1.02 -
1GHT15WW.
- Password prompt appears twice even if the
Power on
password and the Hard disk drive
Password are identical.
- Fail to resume after suspend.
The replacement battery is from a company called 2-power.
Thanks a lot in advance
Daniel
