Yesterday I saw behavior that I've never seen before and that isn't
documented: At one time the battery symbol was blinking in green, at
another it was glowing in green and orange at the same time.

I then disassembled the computer but couldn't find any defect on the
system board at first sight. The socket for the power plug is still
sitting firmly on the board. But maybe it is broken nevertheless, or
maybe something in its vincinity is broken. Anyways, I put the machine
back together and settled for a quick'n'dirty solution:

I took apart an old battery pack (I've three) and removed the cells.
Then I put a socket for an external power supply into the case and
soldered that to the battery's plug. In addition, I had to solder the
battery's thermocouple to the plug (otherwise the machine doesn't accept
the fake device). Finally, I reinserted seven of the eight cells (their
weight is necessary to prevent the machine from onto it's back) and
glued the battery pack back together. The machine now runs fine again.

For charging the remeining two batteries, I use an external battery
charger from IBM.
