Maybe you refer to CS, Cable Select, as most drives these days are set up in
systems to use CS rather than a fixed master or slave setting. Cable select
just sees what is on the cable (say it's a three header IDE cable, 40pin
type, one plug on motherboard, other two for devices) and the first one to
get a crack of the whip is becomes the Master (must be a switch... ;) device
and the second one becomes the slave. I don't think this will affect the
laptop much as I'm pretty sure the UltraBay 2000 device is the slave with
the hard disk 'built in' being the master device. This should not affect
booting these days though.

>From what I'm aware of it's a bit of a hang-up as it were from polled IDE
interface days in which device got more attention or CPU cycles for
transfers, so the slave device, maybe a CD-ROM would have been the slave as
the hard disk 'deserved' more attention/cpu time. Of course with DMA these
days, technically speaking both devices get a fair crack of the whip.

The two IDE devices design would certainly be true of the two spindle based
systems such as a 600 series or T series machine.

As for the A3x series - with two ultrabays - I am not entirely sure,
although there is a fair chance the 'built in' hard disk is on IDE channel
(LUN? Or was that SCSI only?) 0 (Device ID 0, with device ID 1 spare) and
the two Ultrabay slots being channel 1 and device IDs 2 and 3 respectively).

This shouldn't matter a great deal, so long as you have your boot order set
up correctly to which device you wish to boot from it should be fine. The
UltraBay 2000 Hard Disk adapter should take any 9 or 12.5mm 2.5" hard disk.
On the T4x series this would be reduced to 9mm only.

Of course this could be complete rubbish and indicative of me in need of
sleep!

I have lots of emails to catch up on right now so if you emailed me - rest
assured I have your emails and will respond to them ASAP. I have been far
too busy with work and university.

Take care,
Vicky
