[Thinkpad] Re: Thinkpad 385XD power-on password

Recently, I've been working on a Thinkpad 385XD (2635) (as a volunteer
technician at Computers for Schools Ontario). When the machine boots up,
it stops with a password icon which looks like a floppy disk. I'm hoping
this is only a power-on password.

According to the manual - vol4hmm.pdf at page 28, I should be able to
power-on the unit by applying a short across the power-on password jumper
pads that are located in the DIMM area next to #315. No power-on happens.

There is no #315 on the board that I can see. (There is a #345, but it is
located between the 2nd and 3rd memory modules and not where the picture in
the manual shows.) I've used a bright light and a magnifying glass (to
assist my aged eyes) and still nothing.

Does anyone have any useful information on this? If I can't solve the
problem, we have to junk the laptop. BTW, you would be amazed at the number
of laptops donated to us that still have password protection on them and
that therefore have to be dumped.

Best wishes to all.
