Well it really depends on a few things... one is who was actually designing
the ThinkPad line (I could care less about their desktops, honestly - I'm
mostly irked b/c of the ThinkPads) all this time... was it someone in Armonk
NY or someone in China? And as for service getting better, I doubt that,
b/c IBM has been a "services company" for the last few years... that meant
focusing on doing more than just selling the hardware and forgetting you
exist, i.e. Customer Service and Technical Service. They prided themselves
on their ability to stand behind their hardware - I don't know too many
other computer companies (US or International) that do that (meaning Dell,
Sony, Gateway, etc.).
One thing I do know is that they might not intend to alienate their customer
base, but look at Dell, as an example... they shoved their CSR dept to India
because it was the right thing to do for business reasons - cost, value,
turnover, etc. Yet the net result was a pissed of customer base...
Either way I think there won't be too many changes over the next 6-12 months
- the 12-24 month timeframe is where things should get shaken up a bit,
IMHO.
FWIW, I'm already prepared to convince myself in 2 years (when my T41 is
starting to slow down) that I like Sony again, but I won't like that one
bit!
