A man with a 30 Gb drive in his 560x!
Actually the drive is in an external USB2 enclosure waiting to have the
OS installation files copied over.
I got my Hitachi Travelstar 5K80 30GB hard drive
(item #40832428 ATA-6 5400-RPM 8MB 2.5 HDD) for $69 from bananaPC
<http://www.bananapc.com/products/productcategory.aspx?category_id=1087>.
I plugged it into the 560x that I had bought with a dead hard drive.
I knew the computer was OK since I was able to install Win98 lite onto a
512 Mb flash card and start it from the PC card slot.
So I opened it up, put the new drive in and ran FDISK from a boot floppy.
It identified the drive as 8.7 Gb and I had it make one boot partition
with the system on it.
Afterward I was able to boot the computer from the hard drive.
To find the missing 21.3 Gb I put the drive in a generic USB2 drive
enclosure (also from BananaPC)
<http://www.bananapc.com/products/productInfo.aspx?category_id=1093&product_id=10367&searchString=usb%20external%20drive&Op=2>
and plugged into the XP desktop (that dare not speak it's name), and
used the built in drive utilities (somewhere in the control panel under
admin tools?). Being XP there was a cute little graphic showing the
unused part of the drive and asking me what I wanted to do.
I set it up as a secondary partition so I've now got 2 partitions, the
first of which (8.7Gb) can be recognized by the 560x's BIOS and the
second of which should be recognized by Windows.
I'm going to keep the drive in the USB enclosure until I get the OS
installation files copied.
I need:
1.) Win2K CAB files and drivers (from the Win2K CD)
2.) Win2K Lite install files (from LitePC, less that 1Mb!)
3.) Thinkpad setup files (from the IBM/Lenova web site)
Now where did I save that PDF on installing Win2K???
After I get this one running I'm going to format and reinstall the OS on
the solid state 560x. Might even try Win2K since I got another 128 Mb
RAM card from Lacey. On the other hand Win98 Lite would be OK if I
stripped it down to where it's not smart enough to hurt itself.
