Which version of Windows do you use? Windows 2000 and XP Pro have
proven themselves to be very stable OSs that have the ability to
maintain an environment for years without requiring the 'purge and
rebuild' process so well known with Win9x based versions (95, 98, ME).
If you're not currently using XP you should seriously consider it if
your hardware is new/powerful enough for it.
Of course, to preserve the integrity of any OS it is important to avoid
corruption by viruses, worms, adware, and spyware.

I'm using a stripped down install of Win98 SE (thanks to www.litePC.com).
I don't think XP is going to work on my 560x (266 Mhz, 164 Mb RAM, 800
Mb (yes Mb) C: drive).
I'm currently building a 560x with a 30 Gb drive which will get Win 2K
Lite. If the Lite installation is small enough I may try it on the solid
state 560x (800 Mb flash drive for C:)
On the other hand it may revert to DOS 6.2 and Win98 Lite dual boot.
I have an XP desktop (that dare not speak it's name) and thus far I'm
not overly impressed. After months of printing through a parallel port
connected inkjet it has decided that it has no LPT1 port. What's really
amusing is that when I boot it to DOS 6.2 I am able to print just fine.
If XP looks sideways at me I'm going to wipe the C: drive (which is a
separate drive) and install Win2K.
As far as viruses and such go my scheme with 98 Lite is to remove as
much of the vulnerable code as possible using PCLite's installer.
For example and virus trying to run a Windows script on the 98 Lite 560
is going to be very surprised to find that Windows Scripting Host is not
installed.
Sometimes this means that some installers don't run, the nifty wireless
card utility that draws the cute graphic animating the wireless waves
traveling from the card to the access point doesn't work.
I can live with that.
I've had the system connected to my cable modem (through a Linksys
router) for over a year and have yet to find any malware on it.
My XP desktop and my wife's XP laptop haven't done as well.
Remember Win 98 (and 3.1 and 95) is just DOS in a clown suit. The more
of that clown suit you can remove the better it runs.
