Let's not go down the OS discussion road... It never leads anywhere good.
I was just trying to help the original guy with his 'purge & rebuild'
situation with some ideas so that he could avoid it. I did not intend
an OS discussion to ensue.

I didn't get any impression that there was an OS war. Up until a couple
messages ago, there was a discussion about P&R needs and how they are
diminishing. I have seen this with my experience from 95 -> 95OSR2 -> 98SE
-> W2K/XP. FWIW, I have never got a crash in either W2K or XP on my work
computer and every IBM Desktop and Thinkpad I've owned. My gripe is that
things slow down over time. This I've experience uniformly with all
systems. Windows is a little more prone - probably because there are so
many more users than the rest.
What's good about this list is the help I've gotten about these problems. I
have prolonged my P&R sessions by using the latest service packs, Windows
maintenance tools, SpyBot 1.3, Norton Utilities, Norton AV, and Norton
Firewall. Once I get fully knowledgeable, I feel my P&R sessions will be
fewer and further in between - maybe even none!
George
